Nigel Hawthorne and Joan Collins celebrate their success.

Joan Collins and Sir Nigel Hawthorne attended the world premiere of their latest film, The Clandestine Marriage, in London last night not only as its stars but as its saviours. "They rescued the film when it was in severe financial difficulties," said producer Tim Buxton at the Odeon West End. "To both of them I personally owe a huge debt of thanks, but so too does the industry."

Their intervention came four weeks into the shoot in September last year when the original finance for the £4 million movie collapsed. Sir Nigel said: "I got a phone call saying if I did not put up £50,000 we would close. I just had to take out a huge overdraft, but everybody stuck with it and Joan put in three times what I contributed." It gave Mr Buxton time to refinance the film with the help of the BBC and British Screen.

It's charity premiere was also attended by director Christopher Miles, his sister Sarah Miles and actors from the film including Emma Chambers, Paul Nicholls and Tom Hollander. Proceeds were divided between the Children With Leukaemia Trust and the Garden House Hospice.
